Research task on specific cases involving cybersecurity
Whatsapp controversy:
Due to concerns about child abuse occuring through Whatsapp, the government have asked the platform to allow them to 'backdoor' their end-to-end encryption.
End-to-end encryption means that data exchanged between the sender and receiver is converted into code to prevent unauthorised access. This means Whatsapp themselves don't have access to messages or media sent via their platform. Despite this. the government are asking Whatsapp to monitor messages.
This will compromise privacy of users and create a greater risk of hacking, and the boss of Whatsapp has stated he would rather the platform be blocked than agree to go through with this.
Northern Ireland PSNI Data Breach:
A spreadsheet containing personal information such as the name, location, rank and department of every officer and member of staff working for the PSNI was accidentally released publicly online as a result of human error. This poses a threat to the officers and many are considering quitting from their position due to them being a target. Hostility against police in Northern Ireland stems from the Troubles, a 30 year period beginning in the 1960s in which the Catholic communities were facing discrimination from the Protestant-controlled government and its police force. 302 officers were killed over this period. This breach could have been prevented by having files checked before publication or making the spreadsheet less easily accessible.
Julian Assange
Julian Assange is an Australian editor and software programmer. He is being charged with conspiring to hack into US military databases, publishing classified information about the US conduct in illegal wars and direct evidence of war crimes committed by the US. As a result he is being extradited to the UK, which means it has been requested that the US returns Assange to the UK to stand trial and serve his sentence there.
